🩺 OFA Health Testing
All of our breeding dogs are tested through the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA), a respected organization that helps ensure dogs are bred responsibly and free from common hereditary conditions. For French Bulldogs, OFA recommends testing:
🦴 Hips - Ensures strong joints and mobility
❤️ Heart - Promotes healthy cardio system
👁️ Eyes - Detects hereditary vision conditions
🦵 Knees - Prevents luxating patellas
We are proud to share that all of our breeding dogs passed each recommended OFA test with clear results. Copies of their certifications can be viewed on our Meet Our Dogs page.
Why this matters: Not all breeders perform recommended OFA tests. By following these standards, we ensure our puppies start life with the strongest foundation possible. You can learn more about OFA and see recommended health testing by breed by visiting OFA.org
🧬 DNA Health Testing
All of our breeding dogs are tested through Embark/Wisdom Panel, one of the most comprehensive DNA testing platforms available, screening for over 200 genetic conditions.
We are proud to share that all of our dogs are cleared for the conditions most relevant to French Bulldogs, including:
-
Degenerative Myelopathy (DM)
-
Hyperuricosuria (HUU)
-
Juvenile Cataracts (JHC)
-
Canine Multifocal Retinopathy (CMR1)
-
Cystinuria
-
Von Willebrand's Disease (vWD)
These results meet and exceed what is commonly referred to as a '6 panel clear' -- a standard used across the French Bulldog breeding community to indicate dogs free from the most critical hereditary conditions.
The one risk that showed up is Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD), which is tied to the Chondrodystrophy (CDDY) variant. This is not a disease itself but rather a structural characteristic of the breed — roughly 90% of French Bulldogs carry it, and it is a direct result of the compact, low-to-the-ground build that defines them. A Frenchie testing clear for this variant would actually be unusual. With proper care, weight management, and regular vet checkups, most Frenchies live full, active, happy lives.
Copies of DNA results can be viewed on our Meet Our Dogs page. I am also happy to share full pdf file with you.
Why We Do Both
DNA testing and OFA testing aren't redundant -- they work together. DNA testing identifies genetic risk markers in your dog's blueprint. OFA testing physically confirms the body is healthy in practice. A dog can have clean DNA and still develop hip or heart issues, which is why physical evaluations by certified specialists matter. Responsible breeding requires both -- and that's exactly why we do both.
💉 Veterinary Care
Not all veterinarians understand the unique needs of French Bulldogs, which is why choosing the right one matters as much as any health test. We are fortunate to work with a veterinarian who doesn't just treat our dogs, but truly understands the breed. Our vet is also an experienced French Bulldog breeder themselves, which means every recommendation, evaluation, and breeding decision is informed by both medical expertise and hands-on breed knowledge. They would not approve a breeding if they had any concerns about a dog's structure or health. Beyond veterinarian oversight, we have sought mentorship from experienced breeders who share our commitment to ethical practices.
